Nature & Environment

Where is it at?

Strategically located on Navarino Island, Chile, which lies within the Cape Horn World Biosphere Reserve, LAKUTAIA enjoys the status of being established within an area which was listed by NGO Conservation International as one of the world’s 37 most pristine wilderness areas.

Ecosystems & Fauna

When you visit LAKUTAIA you will experience adventurous exploration through world-renown temperate forests, sub-polar evergreen rainforests, and coastal marine systems, which in turn provide habitat for different species such as sea lions, Peale's dolphin, Black dolphin, and occasional visits by orcas and Antarctic Minke whales, Magellanic woodpecker, Andean Condor, albatrosses, auks, gulls, terns, and penguins, among many other.

Flora & Ethno-botanical

The Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve is a world-famous hotspot for Bryophytes and Lichens species, which comprise the “Miniature Forests of Cape Horn.” Sign-up for a visit with us to Omora Ethno-botanical Park, where you will, with the aid of a hand lens, and the assistance of a specialized guide, discover and be marveled but this miniaturized version of the world.

It is also here, at Omora Ethno-botanical Park where we will also learn more about the YAGAN and their special relationship with their plant resource.

Scenic Richness

On top of being composed by a rich and diverse native and endemic flora & fauna, Navarino Island is surrounded by beautiful scenery such as innumerable of fjords and lakes, bays, channels and glaciers, which can be frequently spotted while taking any of LAKUTAIA’s different activities and programs.

WE CARE.

LAKUTAIA cares about the environment.

In order to maintain and protect the World Biosphere Reserve status of Cape Horn, LAKUTAIA works everyday in different projects on this area, as well as being equipped, for example, with state-of-the-art water treatment technology (the first one in the island!) which enables LAKUTAIA to provide maximum comfort with minimal environmental impact.

What’s Ethnobotany? Ethnobotany is a branch of science that studies the relationship between cultures and plants, and more specifically the use, management and general perception of these plants by a given culture. This includes plants for food, textiles, cosmetics, construction, medicine, religion, tools, currency, etc.
